did you know?

strawberries and, to a lesser extent, lilies of the valley were associated with the norse goddess frigg and the celebration of midsummer! this association translated down the line to the virgin mary, who – also like frigg – is seen as a protector of children. in older times it was believed in norway that wild strawberries could not be picked until after midsummer's eve so that mary and the souls of recently deceased children could pick their share first. in some parts of the countryside, lilies of the valley (prosaically called "our lady's tears") were picked and strung into curtains that were hung in the entrances of homes and barns.
